The Origins of Common Identity: Evidence from Alsace-Lorraine

We study how more negative historical exposure to the actions of nation-states—like war, occupation, and repression—affects formation regional identity. The quasi-exogenous division French regions Alsace Lorraine allows us implement a geographical regression discontinuity design at municipal level. Using measures stated revealed preferences, we find that experiences with nation-states are associated stronger identity in short, medium, long run. This is linked preferences for decision-making. Establishing organizations seems be key mechanism maintaining strengthening (JEL H77, N43, N44, N93, N94, Z13)
